The Bowie–Mitchellville (MD) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. proudly congratulates Brother Rodney Sutton (Eta Xi, 1981) on the selection of his lithograph, “The Farmer,” for inclusion in the City of Bowie’s juried art exhibition, “Embracing My Artistic Journey.”
Selected by the City of Bowie Arts Committee, Sutton’s work is part of a curated collection highlighting artistic growth, self-discovery, and creative expression. The exhibition is on display at Bowie City Hall through May 15, 2026, showcasing a diverse range of artists whose work reflects personal inspiration, transformation, and evolving creative voices.
Sutton’s lithograph, “The Farmer,” stands as a powerful visual narrative rooted in history and cultural legacy. The piece is also featured as the opening image in his award-winning documentary film, Farming A Legacy, which chronicles the stories of some of the last remaining Black farmers in Calvert County, Maryland. The film highlights families who, despite generations of adversity, have preserved land ownership and sustained agricultural traditions rooted in the legacy of their ancestors.
Farming A Legacy has received national recognition on the film festival circuit, earning Best Documentary honors at the North Beach American Film Festival and the People’s Choice Award at the Southern Maryland Film Festival.
An accomplished multidisciplinary artist, Sutton earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master of Arts in New Media Photojournalism from the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design. His work often explores themes of heritage, identity, and everyday lived experiences, blending traditional techniques with contemporary storytelling.
The “Embracing My Artistic Journey” exhibition invites the community to engage with artwork that reflects personal and creative evolution. A public reception was held March 5 at Bowie City Hall, offering attendees an opportunity to meet featured artists and experience the exhibit in a welcoming, creative environment.
The Bowie–Mitchellville Alumni Chapter celebrates Brother Sutton’s continued artistic excellence and his contribution to preserving and sharing powerful cultural narratives through visual art.
