The Columbia (MD) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., is sadden by the loss of Brother Johnny Lee Mathews. He was born in Columbus, Ohio on March 2, 1938, to Rosie Mathews (deceased) and John Mathews (deceased) with siblings Brenda Turner (deceased), Mike Moon and Neil Mathews. Brother Mathews received his undergraduate Bachelor of Arts History degree from Ohio State University. He was a faithful member of St. John Baptist Church of Columbia, MD and was active with the Men’s Choir and the Finance Operations Ministry. Brother Mathews was married to Odessa Woods Mathews and their blended family which consists of Mendel Shipmon, Jon Mathews and Lydia Woods (all living). He is survived by grandchildren Everett, Tiffany, Rodgers, Melodye, Tabitha, Elliott, Charity and Gregory Shipmon, Amirah Mathews, Seneca, Koroma, Emmett, Avery Woods-Gresham. Brother Mathews was initiated into the Zeta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. in 1957 and served as Columbia’s (MD) 4th Polemarch from 1977 -78. He was friendly, gregarious, and always willing to volunteer to help others. He loved to travel, enjoyed good music, fishing, reading about current events and sharing fun facts and trivia. Brother Mathews was devoted to Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., the Brothers of the Columbia (MD) Alumni Chapter and St. John Baptist Church.
