On May 9th, 2015 Lt. Col. Curtis Joseph Johnson, 83, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family following a brief illness. He was the fourth of six children born to Eddie and Elzena Pinkins Johnson in Donaldsonville, LA. He graduated from Southern University and was commissioned as a second lieutenant, distinguishing himself while serving as a transportation officer in the Korean and Vietnam theatres. Following military retirement, he received a Master’s degree from Old Dominion University. He subsequently established a management consulting company and assisted numerous organizations in employee training and development. He was active with youth development initiatives, civic and civil rights causes and environmental concerns. He loved his family and wrote two memoirs on the history of his family and the bayou region. He was devoted to his church community, using his commanding reading presence and beautiful tenor voice. He could build and repair anything. He loved remodeling his Whitestone vacation home, gardening, music and singing, fishing and Louisiana cuisine. He befriended everyone, was unique in his ability to make everyone feel special, and loved a good joke. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth “Libby” Clarkson Johnson; his children Kirk Anthony Johnson (Willa Mathis) and Janet Johnson Gaskins (Terry); his grandchildren Drew and Sydney Gaskins and Olivia Johnson; sisters Claudia J. Celestine and Edith Johnson; in-laws Charles E. Clarkson and Harold and Barbara Chapman; and a host of loving relatives.
