Share your Memorial with Family & Friends

On Thursday, January 14, 2021, our beloved brother, Sherman Aloysius Bernett, Sr., transitioned to Chapter Invisible and heard the voice of his Savior saying, “Welcome, thou good and faithful servant. You have fought a good fight; you have finished your course; and you have kept the faith. You may now enter into peaceful rest.”

Brother Bernett grew up in Bowie, Maryland, and was educated in the Prince George’s County Public School System. Upon graduating from Fairmont Heights High School, he went on to attend and graduate from Maryland State College (renamed the University of Maryland Eastern Shore-UMES) in 1965, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Education. A Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Brother Bernett was a 1973 initiate of the Annapolis (MD) Alumni Chapter and an active member until his death. Brother Bernett was also a member of the Knights of Columbus where he served as the Tootsie Roll Program Director; Family Program Director; and Grand Knight.

Brother Bernett began his career as a public servant working for the U.S. Postal Service and later for the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics (DOL-BLS). He remained at DOL-BLS for twenty-six years as a Statistician, until his retirement on January 3, 1997. Brother Bernett was also a good and faithful parishioner of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Upper Marlboro, Maryland, for more than twenty years.

He is survived by his wife Thelma Wise Bernett of fifty-six years, daughter Tracye Gilbert, son Sherman A. Bernett, Jr.; three grandchildren, one great-grandson; four sisters, one sister-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews and many other family and friends whose lives he touched.
